Abstract

The purpose of this research is to see the comparison between the use NHT and STAD techniques on the students' vocabulary mastery at SD Annamiroh 4 Pekanbaru. This study was a Quasi-Experimental approach with pre-test and post-test group design on quantitative design. The samples of this study were 60 students of grade 2 of Elementary School. NHT technique was used in experiment class 1 (30 students), while STAD technique was used in experiment class 2 (30 students). The data were collected by using pre-test and post-test. Quantitative data were analyzed by using inferential statistics and descriptive. The findings showed that there were significant differences in the students' vocabulary in the experimental class 1 using NHT technique (mean = 80.50 and standard deviation = 11.69) and in the experimental class 2 using the STAD technique (mean = 64.16 and standard deviation = 16.24) in which the index of t = -4.469 with p = 0.001 <0.05. So, it can be concluded that NHT technique can provide a more significant improvement than STAD technique on students’ vocabulary mastery.
