Abstract

The primary objective of the study was to find out a comparison of students’ vocabulary mastery between those who were taught using crossword puzzle game and those who were taught using word search puzzle game at SMP IT Bangkinang. Therefore, a comparative experiment was used in this study. The participants of the study comprised 40 year one students of junior high school which were devided into two groups: an experimental group 1 and an experimental group 2. Next, the two groups were given a vocabulary test before being given a treatment. Afterward, the experimental group 1 was treated using crossword puzzle game, while the experimental group 2 was treated using word search puzzle game. Finally, the participants in both groups were administered a vocabulary post-test after the treatment. Then, descriptive statistics were calculated on the collected data to compare the performance of two the groups, and a non-parametric Willcoxon Signeted Ranks Test was conducted to analyze the performances of the two groups on the posttest. The findings indicated that the students who were treated using word search puzzle game outperformed ones who were treated using crossword puzzle game. In conclusion, the word search puzzle game was more effective than crossword puzzle game to the students’ vocabulary mastery at SMP IT Bangkinang academic year 2015-2016.
