Abstract

The main aim of this research was to find out the effect of using Picture Books and DRA strategy on reading comprehension of the second year students at Islamic Junior High YLPI Perhentian Marpoyan Pekanbaru. The research population was all of the second year students. Cluster random sampling was used to take two classes as the sample; VIII 1 as an experimental group 1 and VIII 2 as an experimental group 2. To analyze the data, a paired sample t-test, and an independent sample t-test formula were calculated by using SPSS 20 Version, the data analysis showed that there was a significant effect of using Picture Book Strategy on the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text. To was, 7.56, higher than Tt with df 17 at significant levels of 5% and 1% (2.11 < 7.56 > 2.08). Furthermore, it also could be seen that sig. (2-tailed) or probablities were, 0.000, smaller than 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05). It means Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. Based on the percentage of significant Effect between Pre-test and Post-test of experimental classes by looking for the effect size or eta-squared, the students in experimental group 1 improved 77% of their reading comprehension of narrative text. Then, there was a significant effect of using DRA Strategy on the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text in the experimental group 2. To was 2.27, Higher than Tt with df 17 at significant levels of 5% and 1% (2.11 < 2.27 > 2.08). Furthermore, it also could be seen that sig. (2-tailed) or probablities were, 0.037, Smaller than 0.05 (0.037 < 0.05). It means Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. Based on the percentage of significant effect between Pre- test and Post-test of experimental class by looking for the effect size or eta-squared, the students in the experimental group 2 improved 23% on their reading comprehension of narrative text. It can be concluded that the use of Picture Books strategy is better than the use of DRA strategy.
