Abstract

Various teaching strategies and other supporting activities have been implemented in teaching students how to properly understand the reading, especially in understanding the narrative text. However, based on previous research, it was found that students were not able to write and understand good narrative texts and their motivation in reading was also low. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of using Summarization techniques on students’ ability to understand the narrative text and motivation of students in the second year of SMP An Namiroh Pekanbaru. The study design was a quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent pretest-posttest type. Two groups (54 students) of second-year students of Junior High School An Namiroh Pekanbaru were selected to be sampled using cluster random sampling. The data collection techniques are composition test and questionnaire. Data analysis techniques in SMP An Namiroh have paired sample t-test and independent sample ttest. This study reveals that there is a difference in students' ability to understand narrative texts between control groups and experimental groups. This is indicated by the sig value. (2 tailed) that is 0.000. That is smaller than 0.05. This means that the use of Summarization techniques has a significant impact on students' ability to understand narrative texts. In addition, there were also differences in student motivation between the control group and the experimental group. This can be seen from the sig value. (2 tails) is 0.000. That is smaller than 0.05. It shows that the use of Summarization techniques in English teaching has a significant impact on students' reading motivation. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of Summarization technique in writing has a significant influence on the ability of students in writing narrative text and student motivation in understanding the text in the second year of SMP An Namiroh Pekanbaru.
