Abstract

This research aimed to find out the influence of students’ self-confidence and participation on their speaking ability at SMPN 14 Pekanbaru. The research was a correlational study using quantitative method. The subject of the research was the eight grade students of SMPN 14 consisting of 2 classes, while the research object was the students’ self-confidence and participation as well as their speaking ability. The research sample was taken from acceptable sampling method of which the two classes had 52 students where each class had 26 students. The data were analyzed by using SPSS version 20. The research findings showed that there was an influence of students’ self-confidence and participation on their speaking ability. Based on the results of the questionnaires analyses, it was found out that the students had a high confidence level, while their participation was categorized as average. It was also found out that the average score of their speaking ability was 68.38 being categorized as mediocre. Furthermore, based on Pearson productmoment analysis, the result showed that the influence of the students’ selfconfidence on their speaking was 0.421. The correlation table indicated that there was a strong relationship between the students’ self-confidence and their speaking ability. Then, relationship between the students’ participation and their speaking ability was 0.531, meaning that there was a strong relationship between students’ participation and their speaking ability. Furthermore, it was also proven that the relationship between the students’ self-confidence, participation and speaking ability was 0.624, meaning that there was a strong relationship between the three variables.
