Abstract

Based on the writer’s preliminary research, the writer found the teachers used first language in teaching English. Accordingly, it made the writer interested in circumstances teachers used first language. In addition, the writer also found the relevant theories which said, first language can be used in teaching English judiciously. So, the writer linked the teachers’ classroom the practices with the interview about the use of first language. Thus, to investigate it, the writer used case study which helped the writer to investigate in what condition teachers used the first language in teaching English. The objectives of this research were to explain in which circumstances the teachers use the first language. This research was administrated at MAN 1 Pekanbaru. The participants of this research were two English teachers at MAN 1 Pekanbaru. To select the participants, purposive sampling was used. For this research, the writer did observation related to their ways on teaching, then, they were also given some questions in one to one interview to complete the data of observation that the writer did. Furthermore, the data were analyzed through reviewing and selecting, coding, and interpreting. The data that had been collected through observation and interview were transcribed. Then, the data were matched and categorized into four categories that the writer had determined before. Finally, the result of analysis showed that both of teachers of State MAN 1 Pekanbarutended to use the first language in teaching low level students in four circumstances, those were (1) Explaining difficult vocabulary (2) Explaining grammar (3) Making jokes (4) Giving instruction
