Abstract

This research was conducted based on the problems faced by the students in learning English, especially in writing descriptive paragraph. Based on the researcher’s preliminary research, most of the students had the problems, which are their inability to develop ideas, to write structure of text organization, to choose the appropriate words, to write a proper tenses and lack of vocabulary. Therefore, the researcher need to carry out a research based on these problems. Then, the researcher applied a technique that is called by Mind Mapping Technique to improve students’ ability in writing descriptive paragraph. The objectives of the research are to find out the effect of using mind mapping technique on Students’ ability in writing descriptive paragraph at Islamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru. This research was quasi-experimental research, which used two classes; control and experimental class. The subject of the research was the tenth-grade students of Islamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru. The object of this research was Mind Mapping Technique and their writing ability in descriptive Paragraph. The sample of this research used cluster random sampling. There were 50 students as sample from 156 students. To analyze the data, the researcher used independent sample t-test by using SPSS 16 version and effect size Formula by Julie Pallant. Based on the data analysis, the researcher found that the result of the effect size formula was 0.72. It was categorized as large effect. It means that there is a significant effect of using Mind Mapping Technique on Students’ Ability in Writing Descriptive Paragraph at Islamic Senior High School Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru.
