Abstract

This research is entitled “The Correlation between Students’ Vocabulary Knowledge in Science and their Reading Comprehension of Analytical Exposition Text at the Second Grade of SMA YKPP Dumai.” The reasearch has three formulations of the problem that are; to find out the students’ vocabulary knowledge in science of analytical exposition text, to find out the students’ reading comprehension of analytical exposition text, and finally to infer if there is a siginificant correlation between students’ vocabulary knowledge in science and their reading comprehension of analytical exposition text. This research was a correlational study. There are two variables used in this research. The first is X variable (students’ vocabulary knowledge in science) and the second is Y variable (students’ reading comprehension of analytical exposition text). The subject of this research is the second grade students’ of SMA YKPP Dumai, while the object of this research is students’ vocabulary knowledge in science and their reading comprehension of analytical exposition text. The instrument used in this research was test. Population consists of 160 students, which selected randomly as a sample into 64 students. The technique of analyzing data was Pearson Product Moment and it was analyzed by using SPSS 23.0 program. Based on the data analysis, the writer concluded that there is a significant correlation between students’ vocabulary knowledge in science and their reading comprehension of analytical exposition text at the second grade of SMA YKPP Dumai. It was considered from sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 that was longer than α (0.05). It means that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. From the research findings, it shows that there is a significant correlation between students’ vocabulary knowledge in science and their reading comprehension of analytical exposition text at the second grade of SMA YKPP Dumai.
