Abstract
The purpose of this research is to compare the effect of using Number Head Together and Pairs Check technique on students' reading comprehension at SMAN 1 Kampar Utara. This study is quasi-experimental with pre-test and posttest along with control group subjects. The sample of this study is 71 students of SMAN 1 Kampar Utara. Number Head Together Technique was used in an experiment class 1 (24 students), Pairs Check technique was used in experiment class 2 (23 students), while control class (24) was taught by using conventional method. The data were collected by using pre-test and post-test. They were analyzed by using SPSS 20.0 for inferential and descriptive statistics. The findings show that there is a significant difference between the comprehension of the students in the experimental class taught using the Number Head Together technique and those in the experimental class using the Pairs Check technique. The average score for experimental class taught using the Number Head Together technique is 81.67 and standard deviation is 4.40, while for Pairs Check class, the average is 75.82 and standard deviation is 3.71 in which, t = -4.907 index with p = 0,000 <0.05. The conclusion is, therefore, Number Head Together Technique contributes a better improvement than the Pair Check technique on the reading comprehension of students at SMAN 1 Kampar Utara in the academic year of 2017-2018.
