Abstract

This research was correlational research. It was conducted to find out the correlation between students’ self concept and their speaking ability at eleventh grade of State Senior High School 2 pekanbaru. The specific objective of this research was to find out whether there is or no significant correlation between students’ self concept and their speaking ability. The population of this research was the eleventh grade students which consisted of 6 classes. The total population of this research was 243 students. Because the population was too large, so the reasearcher used simple random sampling technique to take the sample. Thus, the researcher took 30 students as the sample of this research. In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaire to measure students’ self concept and oral test to measure the students’ speaking ability. The researcher analyzed the data by using Pearson Product Moment formula of SPSS Version 16.0. Based on the results, it was found that the mean score of students’ self concept was 72 (good level), while their speaking ability was 72.46 (good level). In terms of the correlation between students’ self concept and their speaking ability, the researcher found that sig. (2tailed)<α=0.000<0.005. Thus, the researcher concluded that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. Moreover, the researcher found that the value of correlation coefficient (r) was 0.912 which indicated that there was a very strong positive correlation between the two variables. Based on the research findings, it could be concluded that there was a significant correlation between students’ self concept and their speaking ability at eleventh grade of State Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru.
