Abstract

The main focus of this research was to find out how is the students’ ability in identifying figurative language. Based on the writer’s preliminary research, it was found that some of the students at State Senior High School 1 Kampar had problems in identifying figurative language. The writer formulated the problems into one research question that would be answered by using quantitative research, it was; a) How is the students’ ability in identifying the figurative language in poems at State Senior High School 1 Kampar? This research had one variable that is students’ ability in identifying figurative language. This research was a descriptive quantitative research. The subject of this research was the eleventhgrade students at State Senior High School 1 Kampar. The writer used cluster random sampling in choosing the sample. The writer took 1 class. So, the sample of this research is 40 students. In collecting the data, the writer used test. In analyzing the data, the writer used descriptive statistics calculated by using SPSS Software. Then the research finding was the students’ ability in identifying figurative language was categorized into enough level at score 64. Based on the result, the writer suggest the teacher to be more creative in teaching to make students more focus so that they can improve their ability in identifying figurative language. Then, the students also should be more active in the class in order to give feedback to the teacher. Keywords: Figurative language
